Oral health tips for the Christmas holidays from your London Ontario Dentist

Here’s what your London Ontario Dentist (Dr. Sbenati), has to say about this crazy year of 2022!

It’s been a wild ride this year, what with Will Smith slapping Chris Rock (who would have thought!), top gun-style Doha driving lessons for the World Cup, and Elon Musk flying his rocket ship to the moon. But one thing that hasn’t changed is the importance of looking after our teeth – even during the festive season. With New Year’s just around the corner, why not start off 2023 with a London Ontario dentist appointment (ie. Sbenati Dentistry ;)), and get your pearly whites sparkling?

Hopefully you’re proactive enough to avoid the need for emergency dentist services, but are you all about that invisalign life? We totally get it! If you want to start the new year on the right foot with straight teeth,  Sbenati Dentistry offers Invisalign so you can have that perfect smile and have your bite corrected.

Top Tips for Keeping your Oral health in Tip Top Shape From Your London Ontario Dentist

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but if you don’t take care of your teeth it can quickly turn into a dental disaster! Here are our top tips for keeping your pearly whites healthy this holiday season.

First and foremost, remember to brush twice a day, especially after eating all those delicious Christmas treats. Every time you snack on something sweet it increases the risk of cavities and tooth decay. And while candy cane mints may seem like a good idea, they won’t do much to protect your teeth so make sure you give them a thorough brushing afterwards.

Another important tip is to cut down on sugary drinks like egg nog and hot cocoa. Instead, opt for water-based beverages like tea or sparkling water.

Don’t forget to floss! We know it can be a tedious task but it’s an essential part of good oral health. So make sure you set aside time each evening to get the job done.

Should you brush your teeth right after eating?

Well, it’s best to wait an hour before brushing. This gives your saliva enough time to neutralize the acid in your mouth from all those sugary treats.

Don’t forget about regular dental check-ups! If you haven’t been for a while, now is the perfect time to get back on track and make sure your teeth are in tip-top condition.

Speaking of teeth, the most important aspect of your oral health is often overlooked. If you’ve been to Sbenati Dentistry, then you would know that it’s the bite! Your bite is the most important aspect of your entire oral health. If your dentist has suggested for you to pay attention to your bite and to think about correcting it, there is a very good reason for that.

What’s so important about getting your bite corrected?

Well, having a London Ontario dentist check your bite can help you avoid more than just embarrassing situations.  Teeth that don’t fit together properly can cause pain in the jaw muscles and headaches (not to mention the social awkwardness of having food stuck between your teeth due to crowding or open spaces!).

Tooth wear is very common if your teeth are not aligned properly and are not being protected.  Teeth grinding (bruxism) can cause you to gradually lose your teeth over time.

A misaligned bite may also lead to cracks and fractures, which we have seen too often this past year!

A tooth diagnosed with Cracked Tooth Syndrome (CTS), for example, can cause pain, discomfort, and sensitivity.  The only true treatment for a tooth with CTS is extraction. It’s not a pretty option, that’s why we recommend you get your bite assessed as soon as possible.

So, as you can see, oral health should definitely be kept high on your priority list this Christmas holiday season.  Don’t wait until after the holiday season to book an appointment with your favourite dentist (wink wink ;)) in London Ontario – take care of yourself and get that smile fixed up for 2023!

Sbenati Dentistry is here to help make sure 2022 ends with a good dentist checkup – and make sure that the New Year’s resolution of getting your teeth done sticks around! As always, give us a call or come in for more information.  We look forward to meeting you soon!  Happy Holidays!  🎄🎁✨😃
