Get The Prompt Emergency Dental Care You Need
As anyone who has experienced a dental emergency can attest, they often happen unexpectedly, causing pain, discomfort, and stress. At Sbenati Dentistry in London, ON, we understand these situations require prompt care and are committed to providing treatment to patients who need it!
Why is emergency dentistry so important?
When a dental emergency occurs, prompt care is often vital. Delaying treatment can result in increased pain, infection, and potential tooth loss. By prioritizing emergency care, you can relieve discomfort, minimize the risk of future damage, and restore your oral health. Whether it’s a knocked-out tooth, severe toothache, or broken dental work, timely care is essential to achieving the best possible outcome.
Four common dental emergencies & what to do until you’re seen by our team:
1. Knocked-Out Tooth
A serious dental emergency requiring immediate attention, a knocked-out tooth should be seen by our team right away. Until you’re in our care, pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part) and avoid touching the root. Rinse it gently with water if it’s dirty, but do not scrub or remove any attached tissue. Try to place the tooth back into its socket but if it’s not possible, keep the tooth moist by placing it in a cup of milk or a saline solution and bring it with you to our office.
2. Severe Toothache
A severe toothache can be caused by various issues, including decay and infection. Rinse your mouth with warm water and use dental floss to remove any food debris that might be causing pain. Use an over-the-counter pain reliever to help manage discomfort until you see us.
3. Broken or Chipped Tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water and save any pieces of the tooth you can find. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth or cheek to reduce swelling and alleviate pain, and use dental wax to temporarily cover any sharp edges.
4. Lost Filling or Crown
A lost filling or crown causes the affected tooth to become vulnerable to damage and infection. You can protect the area by rinsing with warm salt water. If you have the crown, you can try to place it back on the tooth temporarily using dental cement from a pharmacy until you see us
What can happen when emergency care is delayed?
Failing to prioritize timely treatment for a dental emergency can have serious implications. A minor problem can quickly escalate into a more serious issue, such as an infection that spreads to other parts of the body or irreversible damage that results in tooth loss. This can cause extensive and costly treatments down the line, as well as enduring pain and discomfort, which can negatively impact your quality of life.
